The global trade agreement signed at a ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Bali, Indonesia, represents a positive development for Hungary and Europe, Minister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi said on 7 December 2013.

Minister Martonyi, who was one of 160 government ministers from around the world to participate in the conference, said that the agreement aimed at lowering trade barriers and accelerating the passage of goods through customs, was to the benefit of Hungary, because it will serve to increase the country's exports, particularly to non-European Union countries. The importance of the agreement "goes beyond its concrete subject-matter", he added.

The global trade agreement is the first comprehensive agreement the WTO has concluded since the organisation's founding in 1995.

Mr. Martonyi travelled on to the Philippines where he held talks in Manila with Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, Foreign Minister Albert F. del Rosario and local business representatives.

Assessing the talks, Mr. Martonyi said that great potential existed in Hungary enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations with the Philippines, a market of over a hundred million people. He said Hungary has prospects in boosting its exports in meat and pharmaceutical products and there is interest in the Philippines towards Hungarian expertise in water management.

He noted further cooperation possibilities in culture and education, adding in this context the 35 scholarships Hungary has offered under its Stipendium Hungaricum scheme to students from the Philippines.
