Deputy State Secretary Gergely Prőhle received United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas O. Melia in his office on June 5.
They discussed US-Hungarian bilateral relations and the most important issues of Hungarian foreign policy. The Hungarian Deputy State Secretary highlighted the importance of regional cooperation for Hungary. Gergely Prőhle spoke about the priorities of the current Hungarian Presidency of the Central European Initiative (CEI) as well the upcoming Hungarian V4 Presidency; he also stressed the transatlantic relevance of these two forms of regional cooperation.
Thomas O. Melia was also informed about the current state of the monitoring process regarding Hungary in the Council of Europe (CoE) and about the ongoing talks with the Venice Commission of the CoE. Deputy State Secretary Prőhle confirmed the readiness of the Hungarian Government to continue an open dialogue with the bodies of the CoE. Moreover, he emphasised that the Hungarian Government consistently follows the principle of zero tolerance with respect to all forms of anti-Semitism in Hungary.
