It is with regret that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary has become aware of those political statements that show a clear misunderstanding of the remark made by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in his radio interview on May 17, 2013. The Hungarian Prime Minister reacted to the suggestion made by Peer Steinbrück, in which the leader of the social democrats raised the possibility of excluding Hungary from the European Union.
When responding to Peer Steinbrück’s suggestion, Chancellor Angela Merkel precluded this possibility, and the Hungarian Prime Minister is in complete agreement with the position of the German Chancellor. The Hungarian Government firmly opposes drawing Hungary or its government into the ongoing German election campaign. Bringing up ideas regarding the exclusion of Hungary clearly serves campaign purposes. The Hungarian Government rejects all attempts to increase political tension and remains committed to continuing a constructive dialogue.
