On the 10th anniversary of 9/11 Hungary, in line with the international community, is organizing a series of events to remember the victims of terrorism and to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation. The 9/11 commemorative concert and two international conferences will be the highlights of these events.

On the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States of America, Hungary honors the memory of all the victims of terrorism and those who have sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism. Hungary also pays tribute to those who had to rebuild their lives after they had lost their loved ones. On September 11th, a commemorative concert will take place in the Deák square Lutheran Church under the patronage of H.E. Pál Schmitt, President of the Republic of Hungary, who will deliver a speech at the event. The commemorative concert is attended by the Hungarian political and administrative leadership, the representatives of the organizations responsible for the fight against terrorism and members of the Budapest diplomatic corps.

By now, the phrase “9/11” has become the driving force behind counter-terrorism cooperation based on common universal values. Hungary actively participates in international counter-terrorism efforts. In this regard, her contribution to the stabilization of Afghanistan and the achievements during the Hungarian EU Presidency should be highlighted. Hungary is also prepared to take further action in the fight against terrorism, including addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, enhancing inter-cultural dialogue, and promoting respect for international law and democratic values. Hungary is determined to contribute to the common efforts by organizing the following events.

On September 9, the International Centre for Democratic Transition (ICDT) will organize an international conference titled “Ten Years After – Remembering 9/11” at the Central European University (CEU). The event is supported by the US Embassy in Budapest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tom Lantos Institute. The aim of this conference is to examine the way forward in the fight against terrorism. The Ambassador of the United States of America and the Rector of CEU will open the conference with Foreign Minister János Martonyi delivering a keynote speech.

The Counter Terrorism Centre and the Scientific Council for Home Affairs will organize an international conference titled “Terrorism and Democracy in the 21st Century” on 29-30 September 2011. This event will examine the relationship between the fight against terrorism and the restrictions on human rights in order to outline the framework for a sustainable counter terrorism policy that enjoys the support of society. Besides the guest of honor, Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, the Ambassador of the United States of America, the Director of the Counter Terrorism Centre, the European Union’s Counter Terrorism Coordinator and the Deputy Counter Terrorism Coordinator of the US State Department will also be among the speakers.
