János Hóvári, Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited the State of Kuwait as special envoy of President Pál Schmitt on February 26, 2011, and participated in the large-scale celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Kuwait as well as the 20th anniversary of its liberation from the Iraqi occupation. The events were attended by more than twenty rulers and presidents, along with numerous other statesmen from over 57 countries, incumbent and previous leaders of the different international organizations, as well as the commandants of the coalition forces of the military operations in 1991.

Hungary’s participation in the international coalition forces and its contribution to extinguish the oil well fires with jet turbine extinguishers, a famous Hungarian invention, have been greatly appreciated by Kuwait.

The Deputy State Secretary paid a courtesy call on Shaikh Mohammad Al-Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, and handed over a letter of invitation written by President Pál Schmitt to Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait. János Hóvári also requested Kuwait’s support for Hungary’s candidacy for the non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council, and inquired about Kuwait’s position on the latest developments in the Arab World.

Deputy State Secretary János Hóvári also used the occasion of his stay in Kuwait to meet the members of the local Hungarian community of more than 500 people as well as with many prominent figures of the local cultural, economic and social life. In the premises of the Hungarian Embassy, the guest held a presentation on the current political developments in Hungary and the ongoing changes in the Middle East region.
