The funeral of Mark Palmer, former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary from 1986-1990, took place in Washington DC on April 10, 2013.
Hungarian Ambassador György Szapáry attended the event on behalf of the Hungarian Government. Ambassador Szapáry read out the personal message of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who expressed his appreciation for the life and work of Mark Palmer and praised his contribution to the political transformation of Hungary in 1989-1990.
Hungarian and American diplomats – some of them former colleagues of Ambassador Palmer – watched the live broadcast of the funeral ceremony together at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before watching the live broadcast, MFA State Secretary Iván Bába and Chargé d'Affaires Timothy Betts spoke in memory of Mark Palmer and the importance of Hungarian-American diplomatic relations.
