On 14-15 June 2012 the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts for the first time the Annual NATO Conference on Weapons of Mass Destruction, Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation. Hosting the conference demonstrates Hungary’s commitment to the non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The opening statements of the conference are delivered by János Martonyi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Alexander Wershbow NATO Deputy Secretary General and Gábor Iklódy, NATO Assistant Secretary General. The conference – which has traditionally been organized in different NATO member states since 2004 – gives a chance for experts and government officials from member states, as well as from NATO partner countries from Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean, the Gulf and the Pacific region to discuss the issues of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and disarmament. Representatives of international organizations – such as the UN, EU, OSCE, IAEA, CTBTO – and leading international research institutes dealing with the problems of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction will also attend the event, which attracts more and more participants every year. The conference is one of the most important outreach events of the Alliance providing an opportunity for NATO and its partner nations and organizations to discuss even the most sensitive WMD related topics.
