“Walls are covered with mud, buildings, bridges have collapsed, cars and bicycles have been swept everywhere…,” soldiers who have witnessed the catastrophe say.
72 soldiers of the HDF 54th Veszprém Air Surveillance Regiment have been doing rescue work in the area of Devecser since Monday afternoon. 7 trucks and several vehicles have been sent to help evacuate the locals. Food and tea as well as 300 beds and blankets have been delivered to the site of the devastation. The soldiers said that they had never witnessed such a devastating catastrophe in their life. The situation is very severe. Despite the great effort of the troops the results can not be really seen. The devastating flood of red sludge stood as high as 2 metres high on Tuesday morning leaving its mark everywhere. The locals are also taking an active part in rescue work trying to save their houses with their own devices.
