One of the core missions of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team is to support governmental and security organs. The HUN PRT Liaison Teams (LT) move around the districts in the area of responsibility of the contingent. Their main tasks include participation in negotiations with local leaders, and gathering information about the region. The areas in the north are quite difficult to access because sometimes they have to go across impassable mountain roads and riverbeds.
One of these northern districts, Burka lies at an elevation of 1600 meters, and the LTs can get there only with a 4-5-hour march. The natural features do not only favor agriculture but unfortunately serve as a safe haven for hostile forces. ISAF has conducted a number of security operations in this area. For this reason, it is important to make sure that the Afghan people and the security organizations know that the HUN PRT supports them.
As part of this support, Lt.-Col. Norbert Kerezsi, deputy commander and 1st Lt. Imre Legoza, the commander of the LT recently handed over 20 tents and 100 flood defence gabions to Mahmud Sadad, the governor of the district.
“The melting snow in the mountains swells the small streams to rivers, which put people’s lives at risk and destroy everything in their way. The assistance from the Hungarian contingent has been vital to us, so we’d like to say thanks for it”, the governor of the district said.
Springtime means flood preventions works to adults, while the bell has gone in the schools. The school year has started for 400 students in one of the biggest secondary schools in Burka District. The LT has donated blackboards, several hundred exercise books, pens, pencils, pencil-cases, schoolbags as well as footballs and volleyballs to them.
