The Defence Policy Department of the Hungarian Ministry of Defence operates under the supervision of the Deputy State Secretary for Defence Policy and Planning. The tasks undertaken by the department include:

  • analysing and planning the defence policy of Hungary, and evaluating the security environment,
  • coordinating the elaboration of the Ministry’s viewpoint concerning NATO’s defence policy, as well as EU foreign, security, and defence policy,
  • participating in NATO’s organisations dealing with nuclear policy and strategy, as well as issues of nuclear proliferation, and coordinating, elaborating, and representing national standpoints concerning any nuclear issues,
  • handling issues related to WMD proliferation and arms control,
  • preparing decisions concerning the Hungarian participation in crisis management and peacekeeping operations of various international organisations (NATO, EU, UN, OSCE),
  • drafting the concept of the role of the Hungarian Defence Forces in international missions and operations, and analysing and processing the information relative to crisis management and peacekeeping missions provided by the various military organisations of the defence forces,
  • participating in and helping to develop the NATO crisis response and the EU crisis management systems,
  • supervising the work of the Defence Policy Section of the Permanent NATO Representation of Hungary, as well as the Military Representation of the Permanent OSCE Representation of Hungary,
  • drafting the guidelines of the Ministry’s multilateral cooperation, planning the tasks relative to multilateral relations, and compiling the Plan for Multilateral Cooperation and coordinating its implementation,
  • coordinating the preparation and implementation of the Ministry’s tasks during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2011.
