On behalf of the Hungarian Government Minister of Defence and Lieutenant General Tibor Benkő, Chief of Defence Staff of the Hungarian Defence Forces and Secretary of State for Education Dr Rózsa Hoffman laid wreaths at the Memorial of Arad martyrs.

 Based on the experience of our Romanian allies the dual citizenship law has been implemented for the Hungarians living beyond the borders of Hungary, the minister of the Hungarian government said receiving the applause of thousands of people gathering to commemorate.

Later, Csaba Hende also stated that we strongly support decentralization and autonomy of the Hungarian community’s efforts. Our government pays a particular attention to the fate of Hungarians living in diasporas: the institutions of communities are aimed to be preserved and enriched, the minister said.

At the ceremony held at the Statue of Liberty in Arad Deputy PM Béla Markó, Chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania and several Romanian politicians gave a speech.

 On the memorial day of October 6 the foot of the Obelisk built at the site of the 1849 executions was covered with as many as five hundred wreaths.

At the monument giving place for the mortal remains of the martyrs the descendants of General Damjanich and Károly Knézich also laid flowers of commemoration.
