Journalists had the possibility to take aerial photographs of the settlements of Veszprém County covered with red sludge on October 8.
Press photographers and cameramen were taken over the burst reservoir and the disaster-hit areas by one of the Mi-17 transport helicopters of the Hungarian Army.
The aerial photos below show Devecser and Kolontár, two settlements flooded by toxic red sludge. The dam of the burst reservoir gave way last week, covering an area of about forty square kilometres in toxic, highly alkaline mud.
The HDF have sent 189 soldiers and 41 military vehicles to the stricken area to help evacuate the residents. The troops of the HDF 12th Arrabona Anti Aircraft Missile Regiment, HDF 93rd ’Sándor Petőfi’ NBC Battalion, HDF 43rd Signal and Command and Control Support Regiment, MH 37th ’Ferenc Rákóczi II’ Engineering Battalion, HDF 54th Veszprém Air Surveillance Regiment have been rescuing the residents of the hard-hit villages.
