The “European Enterprise Promotion Award” was announced and jointly organized for the eighth time by the European Commission and the Ministry for National Economy. The competition aims to showcase best practices which assist in the founding, operation and development of enterprises, Mihály Varga said. As the Minister added, Hungarian enterprises can rely on the attention and support of the Government.

Mihály Varga also spoke about GDP data published yesterday and he stressed that economic growth in the first quarter was well above analysts’ prior expectations. He emphasised that growth is not only driven by exports but domestic demand as well.

He said it is important that expansion should become broad-based and besides the vehicle manufacturing and electronics sectors as many as possible others must also benefit from the upturn. The Minister pointed out that the economic rebound has been accompanied by real improvement on the labour market, as the number of people in employment increased by 260 thousand over the past one year.

In the opinion of the Minister, it is now time to accelerate economic growth and for new sectors to join the revival. Among these sectors he mentioned the healthcare industry, tourism and the food industry.

The “European Enterprise Promotion Awards” invited applications by enterprises in six categories from four additional European countries -- along with the EU 28. The winner of the Grand Jury Prize is the most creative and inspiring enterprise.

Speaking about Hungarian awardees, the Minister mentioned that in 2011 Hotel Panda was placed first in the Responsible and Inclusive Entrepreneurship category, while in 2007 the Széchenyi Card Programme received a special award.
