This year Hungary is not planning to significantly reduce its contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, but it has started discussions with the allies on the timeline of the expected future drawdown – Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende told General John Allen, the Commander of ISAF in Brussels on April 18.
Of course, ISAF will not let Afghanistan down, it is only the current system that will be transformed radically. This was stated at a conference recently held in Camp Pannonia, Afghanistan. The event was organized on the initiative of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) with the aim of providing a venue for brainstorming and analyzing the lessons learned in the provinces of the northern region that had been involved in earlier phases of the transition process.
One of the core missions of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team is to support governmental and security organs. The HUN PRT Liaison Teams (LT) move around the districts in the area of responsibility of the contingent. Their main tasks include participation in negotiations with local leaders, and gathering information about the region. The areas in the north are quite difficult to access because sometimes they have to go across impassable mountain roads and riverbeds.
The experience our soldiers gain in mission areas can be put to good use in the interest of territorial defence, the armed defence of the Homeland”, said Dr. Csaba Hende on March 20. The Minister of Defence attended in Szolnok the “Welcome Home” ceremony for the 11th rotation of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT-11) and the farewell ceremony for the troops to deploy with the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere paid a visit to the Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in the area of responsibility of the International Security Assistance Force Regional Command-North (ISAF RC-N) in Afghanistan, accompanied by Maj.-Gen. Erich Pfeffer, the newly appointed commander of RC-N. There are Hungarian, Swedish, Turkish and Norwegian PRTs operating around the nine provinces in the AOR of the Germany-led ISAF RC-N.
We are working together for the future of Afghanistan and Baghlan Province. Whatever nationality we have, we are striving to achieve the same goal, which is better life and better future for the people of Baghlan – this was stated at a ceremony marking the transfer of authority between the 11th and the 12th rotations of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT).
The Chief of Police of Baghlan Province recently submitted an unusual request. Gen. Asadullah Sherzad requested the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) to help the reintegration of former insurgents into society.
“The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)’s gradual transition of lead security responsibility and the related tasks to the Afghan security forces is on schedule and making steady progress province by province and region by region in Afghanistan” – Dr. Csaba Hende pointed out in Brussels. The Minister of Defence participated in the Defence Ministers’ Meeting of NATO member countries that ended on Friday, February 3.
