The members of the HDF Kabul International Airport Force Protection Contingent (HDF KAIA FPC) held a sports day on June 27 in commemoration of St. Ladislas, the patron saint of infantrymen.

Most soldiers serving with the HDF KAIA FPC are drawn from the 62nd Infantry Battalion of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade. The members of the KAIA Force Protection Group participated in the football championship, which was arranged on the day of the branch. In addition to the four Hungarian teams, an all-Portuguese one and a “mixed team” also entered the championship. The winning team of the 1st Hungarian platoon played with the Portuguese service members in the final and beat them in a penalty shootout.

The next day, like on every Friday, there was a day off in Afghanistan. During the dinner scheduled for the rest day, those holding their name-day received the invited guests with specialties of the Hungarian cuisine. WO Sándor T. helped with preparing the goulash, as he has already proved himself to be an excellent cook several times in the mission.

St. Ladislas was one of the greatest military leaders of his age, who also gained international prestige besides restoring Hungary’s external and internal security. Every modern-day army needs the fundamental military values embodied in his personality. These are courage, the willingness to make sacrifices for the homeland, chivalry as well as solidarity with the weak and with women.
