Shindand, Herat Province
- The Mi-17 Air Advisory Team is the latest operational role assumed by the Hungarian Defence Forces in Afghanistan.
- Currently the fourth rotation is serving in Afghanistan.
- We have assumed the task for 3x4 months (until September 2012), and the government of Hungary has extended the mandate to run until September 2013.
- Strength: 8 personnel (3 officers and 5 NCOs/warrant officers)
- The personnel of the Team consist of the airmen of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base who serve in four-month rotations.
- The mission of the HDF Mi-17 Air Advisory Team is to provide classroom instruction and on-the-job training for the Mi-17 transport helicopter aircrews of the Afghan Air Force (AAF) and to train them in the aviation unit maintenance (AVUM) of the helicopters of the Afghan National Army Air Corps (ANAAC) as well as to mentor the aircraft maintenance technicians.
- The HDF Mi-17 AAT is based in Shindand, Herat Province and executes its tasks as part of the Italian–Hungarian Mi-17 Air Advisory Team under Italian national command.
- The HDF Mi-17 AAT performs its instructional and mentoring activities in the subordination of the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan (NTM-A).
- In connection with the air mentoring tasks, the two Mi-17 transport helicopters donated by Finland arrived in Hungary in September 2011. These aircraft support and assist the home station training of the airmen who are designated to perform air mentor duties in Afghanistan.
