Hungary has launched a nationwide initiative for the better teaching of mathematics and other natural sciences under the name GEOMATECH. The initiative is spearheaded by the Budapest University for Applied Sciences and GeoGebra Nonprofit Ltd.

Minister of State for Public Education Rózsa Hoffmann said at the launch of the initiative that making mathematics and other natural sciences more popular and approachable is an important part of the reform of the public education system.

“Within the Geomatech initiative we will train several thousand teachers how to teach the material provided to them, in addition to which the teaching materials will be made available free online for the general public” – Geomatech project manager László Mészáros said.

The initiative makes use of free, Java-based interactive geometry, algebra and calculus application GeoGebra. Mr. Mészáros added that GeoGebra is not just a piece of software, but also a worldwide community of thousands of teachers. Geomatech will be set up in Hungary with the help of the University of Cambridge and the International GeoGebra Institute of Linz, Austria.
