The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Hungary welcomes the President of Myanmar’s amnesty decree of 13 January releasing hundreds of political prisoners, and the ceasefire agreement signed by the Government of Myanmar and the Karen National Union on 12 January.
On their meeting on 17 January 2012, the Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasised that the extermination of the victims of the Holocaust meant a serious historical loss for the whole Hungarian nation; it is our duty to remember them. We regard it as a national issue to keep the memory of Raoul Wallenberg and other heroes rescuing our persecuted compatriots alive.
In his message to the participants of the commemoration held by the Jewish Congregation of Budapest in the Dohány Street Synagogue on 18 January 2012, the Hungarian Foreign Minister claimed the Shoah to still be an open wound in Hungarian history, and stated that during the time of terror the Hungarian state had failed to protect its citizens, who, therefore, had lost their country in which they had been born and their fate, having been deprived of their Hungarian identity and human dignity.
Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi and his Swedish counterpart, Carl Bildt inaugurated the Wallenberg Year. The guest of honour of the ceremony was Yossi Peled, Minister without Portfolio from Israel.
The Foreign Ministry’s Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs János Hóvári and the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Director-General for European Issues Jiro Kodera held the next round of the annual consultations of Hungarian-Japanese Foreign Ministries in Tokyo on 16 January 2012.

János Martonyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed a letter to his EU counterparts presenting the background and aims of the recent re-structuring of the constitutional order in Hungary.
On 19 December 2011 János Martonyi Hungarian Foreign Minister presented at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (MKI) the document entitled „Hungarian Foreign Policy after the EU presidency”, which summarizes the strategic directions of Hungarian Foreign Policy. On December 17, 2011, we commemorate the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the United States. After the agreement entered into force, an American Legation was opened in Budapest and Count László Széchenyi presented his credentials in Washington, D.C.
The Hungarian Government welcomes the fact that, after consultations between the representatives of the Serbian Government and those of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians and in accordance with their agreement, the Serbian National Assembly on the 5th of December has adopted the Act on Rehabilitation.

Hungary -- with full support to the Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the elections in the breakaway region of South Ossetia in Georgia of 14 November 2011 -- does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework within which those elections were held.
Minister for Foreign Affairs János Martonyi will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting of Development Ministers to be held in Brussels on 14 November. The main issues on the agenda are future of the EU’s development policy, budget support, the EU common position for the Fourth High level Forum on Aid Effectiveness and the Horn of Africa.
Raoul Wallenberg, honorary citizen of Budapest, rescuer of ten thousands of Hungarian citizens would be one hundred years old in 2012. At its session on 2 November 2011 the Government has taken a decision according to which, on the occasion of the centennial, Hungary shall duly commemorate the rescuer Swedish diplomat in the context of the Raoul Wallenberg Year. On this occasion we shall recall this tragic period of the past in Hungary and at our foreign representations, and we shall also commemorate the deeds of other rescuers besides Wallenberg.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary has learnt with deep sorrow about the recent death of Mrs Laura Pollán, founding member of the Cuban human rights activist movement ’Ladies in White’ (Dama de Blanco). Mrs Pollán’s persistent and uncompromising peaceful struggle for the liberation of the imprisoned political prisoners and for the respect of human rights has made her respected and appreciated worldwide.
Hungary welcomes that the Commission reported about the progress of nearly all the countries that are committed to joining the European Union. We also welcome the progress made by Serbia. However, the law on property restitution and compensation passed by the Serbian Parliament on September 26 is of grave concern to us.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary was deeply shocked by the news of the planned attempt on the life of Saud Arabia’s Ambassador in Washington D.C. which was successfully thwarted by US law enforcement organizations.
The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) organises regional humanitarian outreach forums in Europe since 2009. The aim of these events is to raise awareness on the basics of international humanitarian coordination, to provide general information on the role of OCHA, and to discuss current humanitarian crises and challenges. This year, the forum titled „European Humanitarian Partnership Forum – Responding in a changing world” will be organized 6.10.2011, together with the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Budapest.
On September 20th Minister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi participated at the UN summit in support of Libya hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and attended among others by US President Barack Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, leader of the Libyan Transitional National Transitional Council (NTC).

We welcome the success of the National Transitional Council in gaining authority over Libya which will enable the advancement of its democratic objectives. The Government of Hungary regards the NTC as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people. Following the meeting of Foreign Minister János Martonyi and the Leader of the Council in March 2011, over the recent months contact with the NTC has been continuous through our special envoy to Benghazi.
The Visegrad countries - the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia - express their concern with the recent situation in Ukraine triggered by the decision of the Pechersk District Court and the following arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko.
