A total of 1150 billion forints are available for the development of the Lake Fertő area cycling route network. This means that the development projects with which the cycling route network around the Hungarian part of the Lake Fertő Area will be on a par and in some cases exceed the quality of the Austrian network will be completed this year", Minister for Rural Development Sándor Fazekas said at the inauguration ceremony of a new cycling route network in the town of Hegykő, western Hungary.

State funding enabled the construction of bicycle routes in and around the towns of Fertőboz and Fertőszéplak and on the outskirts of Fertőrákos, Fertőd, Hidegség, Fertőhomok and Hegykő.

Mr. Fazekas stressed that the region is utilising government funding effectively and further bicycle route projects will also be realised. A budget of some 700 million forints (EUR 2.3 million) is available that will ensure that it will be possible to cycle all the way around Lake Fertő, he said, emphasising that this area is part of the world heritage and has many hidden treasures. The Government's philosophy is that rural Hungary and its natural treasures should be made more accessible to everyone.

Mayor of Hegykő István Szigethi stressed that the new bicycle route was worthy of the world heritage. According to the Mayor, the town and the government had together pad an old debt, because the former path had always been used by locals and residents of the surrounding area for going to work and leisure.

Fidesz-KDNP MP Mátyás Firti said that the 450 million forints in funding received from the government so far reinforces cohesion between the settlements in the Lake Fertőd area.
