Project owner Magyar Közút Nonprofit Ltd. built a new roundabout intersection on Main Road No. 5 using only national budget funds. The project was completed less than two months after the building area was taken over. The roundabout will eliminate congestions on the main road section which leads to the pedestrian entrance of the Mercedes-Benz Factory.

The Hungarian State undertook to build or rebuild various roundabout intersections for the successful completion of the investment of Daimler AG in Kecskemét. The development became possible from approximately HUF 320 million of budget support. The building works were performed by the DME Consortium (Duna Aszfalt Ltd. Magyar Aszfalt Ltd., EuroAszfalt Ltd.) selected in the public procurement procedure.

“It is a basic goal that the transport infrastructure and public services should efficiently serve economic processes to promote competitiveness. In addition to building the roundabout, Kunság and Kőrös Volán extended their bus lines in the region of Kecskemét from mid-December in harmony with the new work regime of the Mercedes factory”, said Pál Völner at the inauguration ceremony on 18 December 2013. “The Government is also ready to encourage job creation projects with developments that improve access to sites. To this end, it has recently declared the administrative procedures required for building the planned roundabout at the South Miskolc Industrial Park as a priority matter. In the capital of Borsod County, one thousand jobs could be created by a green-field investment of Japanese Takata, a supplier of Daimler”, added the Secretary of State for Infrastructure of the Ministry of National Development.

Speaking of the project, Mayor of Kecskemét Gábor Zombor explained that “this investment of Magyar Közút Nonprofit Ltd., which came to completion within a record time, is an important element in the economic development program of Kecskemét as the improvement of infrastructure conditions could make the city more attractive also for investors.”

Frank Klein, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Kft., stressed that “We started to build one of the world’s most modern and efficient car factories in Kecskemét five years ago, to which we received unprecedented support from both the Government and its agencies, not to mention the City of Kecskemét. Our current successes are due to this exemplary support. The completion of this roundabout is vital for us as it will considerably improve access to the factory. In addition, our southern industrial area will become accessible in line with our long-term plans. Our heartfelt thanks go to all parties concerned for making all this possible.”

The intersection with the traditional roundabout has an external radius of 25 m and an internal radius of 17 meters, informed József Szőke, Deputy CEO for Engineering of Magyar Közút Nonprofit Ltd. The structure includes 803 cubic meters of asphalt, 933 cubic meters of concrete and 1,184 cubic meters of sandy rubble. The builders removed some 1,038 cubic meters of old pavement and moved nearly 3,113 cubic meters of earth. Provided with modern public lighting, the environment of the intersection underwent landscaping, including grass and vegetation.
