The development funded from the New Széchenyi Plan concerns one of the most important sections of Budapest suburban railway transport, the Budapest-Esztergom railway line serving 14 thousand passengers per day. In the first phase, the railway track was refurbished along more than 30 km between Pilisvörösvár and Esztergom. Thanks to the comprehensive reconstruction, the accessibility of stations and stops improved, access times shorten, railway transport becomes more predictable and the standard of passenger transport will rise. The comprehensive investment worth almost HUF 20bn was inaugurated by Minister of State for Infrastructure Pál Völner in Dorog on 12 December, 2013.

In addition to the refurbishment of a single track section of 32.7 km between Pilisvörösvár and Esztergom, a 2 km passing loop was also constructed at the Terranova Factory. Trains heading to the opposite directions are thus able to pass without having to stop. Between Piliscsaba and Esztergom, the travelling speed of trains is to grow from the current 60 km to 70–100 km per hour, whereby the access time will significantly shorten along the whole section. Noise and dust burden will considerably reduce thanks to the modernisation. Passengers can start using trains between Pilisvörösvár and Esztergom from 15 December, 2013.

The implementation of the section up to the Northern Railway Bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. Within the framework of the investment, a new, two track railway section is to be constructed between the stops Aquincum felső and Pilisvörösvár, making a speed as high as 100 km per hour attainable. After the completion of the whole reconstruction, access times between Budapest and Esztergom are expected to shorten by over 20 minutes. By autumn 2015, travelling will be made even more comfortable by the new FLIRT multiple units put into circulation here”, Minister of State for Infrastructure Pál Völner said.

“In the case of suburban railway lines, the priority goal is to improve access conditions since it is comfortable and safe access that can induce as many passengers as possible to use railway transport. Therefore, along the section now inaugurated, a total of 1170 P+R and 422 B+R parking facilities are to be constructed at 11 sites. Next to the station in Dorog, a bus turn facilitating changing over to trains has been established. Outdoor lighting has been installed at stops, platforms have been widened a platform roofs have been elevated”, Dániel Loppert, Head of Communications of NIF Ltd. (National Infrastructure Development Co.) pointed out.

New underpasses are to be constructed in the area around the Terranova factory and at the end of the Pilisvörösvár station to enable the traffic of Road 10 to cross. The two overhead crossings at Kálvária and Őrhegy streets and the underpasses at Piliscsaba and Tó streets in Pilisvörösvár have been reconstructed and made safer. New pedestrian underpasses or crosses have been established in Szabadságliget, Piliscsaba, Pilisjászfalu and Piliscsév.

“The development of the Esztergom line is very important for MÁV. Constant efforts to raise the service standard on one of the busiest Budapest suburban lines have attracted numerous new passengers to using the railway already. We aim to shorten access times and keep giving more comfort and satisfaction to passengers here as well as along other lines”, Deputy Director General for Operation of Infrastructure and Business Development of MÁV Ltd. László Pál added.
