The wastewater treatment plant in Szarvas, financed from public and EU funds, started its test run on 27 February, 2014. The investment was inaugurated by Minister of National Development Zsuzsa Németh, who also delivered an address at a conference held on the major EU investments in the town of Szarvas after the inauguration ceremony.

The effects of the investment worth some HUF 1.5 billion will be beneficial for the population of Szarvas of almost 18 thousand. Thanks to the investment, odour impact and operational costs will be reduced and wastewater disposal will be implemented in an environmentally friendly way.

The increased protection of natural waters in Hungary requires the priority treatment of investments related to wastewater disposal and treatment, Zsuzsa Németh emphasised, adding that these projects significantly affected economic and tourism developments. At the moment, there are 210 investments altogether related to wastewater disposal and treatment in Hungary.

Projects of the Environment and Energy Operational Programme (EEOP) have been implemented in Szarvas in the spirit of water and nature protection, renewable energy, sustainable lifestyle and attitude formation, from almost HUF 1bn in recent years.
