With immense efforts, Hungary has succeeded in restoring its European prestige in the field of aviation defence, Deputy State Secretary for Transport Zoltán Schváb said at the Professional Training and Scientific Conference of Aviation Defence Officers in Debrecen on 28 May, 2014.

While Liszt Ferenc International Airport suffered several downgradings before, auditors of the European Commission could not find significant shortcomings during the audit and test recently conducted at Budapest Airport, the Deputy State Secretary pointed out. In 2011, Debrecen Airport had also successfully passed an audit by the EU, Zoltán Schváb recalled. In 2012, furthermore, it was the Aviation Bureau of the National Transport Authority that conducted a successful audit. It is partly thanks to the impeccable work of experts in the field of aviation defence that airports in Hungary are able to meet the strict safety requirements.

Aviation is the safest way of transport: while in 1993, there were 75 fatal accidents per 10 million flights, this indicator improved to 22 by 2012 and has been improving ever since. Keeping aviation safety at this high quality level requires, amidst the growing number of challenges, the continuous training of employees in the field, Zoltán Schváb added.

At the event supported by the National University of Public Service and the National Transport Authority, there were some 140 aviation defence officers, tutors, auditors and other experts who obtained a certificate of completing the training. After lectures delivered by representatives of the Ministry of National Development, the Aviation Bureau of the National Transport Authority, the Airport Police Directorate, the National Tax and Customs Administration and the National Food Chain Safety Office, participants learned about the services and development plans of Debrecen International Airport during an on-site inspection.
