The Rókus Hospital in the southern Hungarian town of Baja held the topping out ceremony of its newly constructed building on Thursday, attended by Minister of State for Health Miklós Szócska. The new wing will house technological support, diagnostics, patient management and other facilities.

“We inherited a crumbling health infrastructure, but wherever we go in the country, healthcare is being renewed, patients are being cared for among 21st century conditions and doctors are able to work in a 21st century environment”, Mr. Szócska said at the ceremony.

The Minister of State said the healthcare system has now received a transparent structure in which everything has its rightful place and funds are allocated in accordance with each unit’s role. He said the two wage increases for medical staff and the three budget increases for the healthcare system are already showing results and the Government will continue to work towards further improving healthcare.

Gábor Tóth, Director General of the hospital, said that since the institution was established in 1795, this was the single biggest development project, with the new 10,000 square metre wing destined to become an emblematic landmark for the town. He said their ambition was to become the best hospital in the country. The structurally completed new wing is expected to open by the end of the summer.
